Do I need to see a therapist?

My girlfriend recently bought me this magnet due to my habit of alignment.

It reads:

The Law Of Straightness

EVERYTHING must be STRAIGHT or else the World will EXPLODE*

*Those who do not believe in the Law of Straightness will not BE SAVED

It’s from UK artist Edward Monkton, known for his quirky and philosophical musings on life. It got me wondering if it was a design “thing”. While I work my desk has to be tidy, I don’t like clutter, I like my focus to be on the project in hand without any distraction (although the Internet is another matter!!).

My OfficeLogo Designer David Airey recently added photos of his workplace, which looks clutter free. And in an blog on 5 Things Every Freelance Designer Should Do, Tim Smith made a point on the importance of a clean and tidy office.

How do you like to work? Is keeping a tidy office different from wanting straight lines? Do I need to see a therapist!? ;o).

Hi Wes, nice clutter-free workspace you’ve got there, and I like how you can look out the window too. I reckon some natural daylight is important.

    Cheers for the mention buddy.

Thanks David, Natural light is good and great when the sun is shining. I have recently added a mini orange plant to my desk for a bit more colour!

  3. Wes,
I completely agree about your habit of alignment – it seems like a really strange habit to others, but a necessity to us designers!
Just thought that I’d say that you have a nice clean setup, really ideal…
And your bit about “although the Internet is another matter”, how do you get around getting lost for hours on design blogs?

  4. Wes Butler says:

Hi Joe. I convince myself that getting lost for hours on design blogs is all part of business and learning more about the industry… which is partly true!!

Fair enough then! All the best – (+1) Subscriber
